Background and Analysis:

Emergency Management in Olympia is defined and described in the City of Olympia Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan (CEMP). Cities with populations of more than 10,000 are required to have a CEMP.

The Mayor and other members of the City Council have specific roles and responsibilities in emergency management. Councilmembers also need to be personally prepared to fulfill their duties in an emergency/disaster situation. The Council briefing will include a discussion of Councilmember roles and tools needed to be personally prepared.

The briefing will touch on future opportunities for Councilmember training on Emergency Management in March; the Cascadia Rising Earthquake drill in June; and the Thurston Region Hazard Mitigation Plan that will be completed later this year.

The briefing will provide details on the development of the draft 2016 Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan, which will come before Council as a Consent Item at the March 1, 2016 Council meeting.

Finally, the briefing will touch on housekeeping changes needed to make the Municipal Code consistent with the CEMP.
