Background and Analysis:
Under the approved 2017 Olympia Heritage Commission Work Plan, the Commission will continue to develop familiarity with heritage regulations and practices. The Commission will also provide staff with input on developing a cultural resource sensitivity training program for volunteers and staff working in City parks.
This discussion will introduce some of the basic concepts and regulations related to the protection of archaeological and culturally significant sites. Attachment 1 provides an overview from the Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation on archaeology in Washington State. Attachment 2 is Olympia’s municipal code for the protection of archaeological sites.
