Background and Analysis:
Located in the East-West alley between 4th and 5th avenues from Capitol Way to Washington Street, the TJ Potter Mural was originally installed by Ira Coyne in June 2015 and paid for with Thurston County Heritage grant funds. Recently, this mural has been defaced by graffiti and is in need of restoration [see attached images]. The PBIA board has expressed interest in restoring this mural using budgeted Streetscape Beautification dollars. Protection can be included in existing Mural Protection budget.
Neighborhood/Community Interests (if known):
This mural concept was approved by the Olympia Heritage Commission. Downtown alleys are named after “Mosquito Fleet vessels”, which comprised the early transportation system around Puget Sound.
Options:
1. Approve the use of $1,633.50 of Streetscape Beautification budget to restore the TJ Potter mural.
2. Decline to restore mural
Financial Impact:
There is $4000 remaining in PBIA’s Art Investment budget.
