Background and Analysis:
After last month's presentation and discussion with the Police Auditor, Co-Chair Genevieve Chan met with staff and suggested space to address this sensitive issue in a way that reflects our understanding of experiences, backgrounds, and trauma that lead it to be a charged topic. Rather than trying to neutralize that dynamic with detached and professional language, it may be helpful to take time to discuss our individual experiences that we bring to the topic, potential emotional reactions that may come up, and how best to navigate this work with that understanding.

Additionally, between the work to understand, give feedback, and provide oversight to the police commissioner and the work to research, understand, and create a recommendation on a permanent police oversight model, it may be helpful to hold a retreat to dive deep on this subject.

This item does not involve any of the climate sectors in the climate framework: buildings/energy use, transportation/land use, water/waste, or agriculture/forests/urban tree canopy.

Equity Analysis:
Taking a step back and determining the best way to engage in work around police oversight, especially when using a trauma informed approach, is likely to make the process more accessible for community members directly impacted by the topic. Additionally, it may lead to a better overall outcome for those community members.
