Background and Analysis:
The Social Justice & Equity Commission's Work Plan includes developing a recommendation for City Council's consideration on community involvement in law enforcement. A subcommittee of the Commission has been established to participate in the engagement and design process and develop a draft recommendation for the full Commission to review and then forward to the City Council for consideration.

The purpose of this agenda item is to provide the Commission with an update on the process, including what the subcommittee and other process participants have learned and progress made to date in the development of a recommendation.

The subcommittee members have now completed their series of meetings. Subsequently, this update will include a discussion of the next phase in the process, in which the remaining work sessions will include Commission, community member and Olympia Police Department participants and will launch with a combined work session on Saturday, January 27.

Climate Analysis:
This project is not expected to have an impact on greenhouse gas emissions.

Equity Analysis:
The process to develop a final recommendation will engage community members with a diversity of lived experiences and perspectives, including marginalized community members and those who have been impacted by policing. The recommendation should address ensuring processes are accessible to all; investigations are fair, thorough, objective and without bias; transparency and accountability; and improved policies, practices and training.
