Background and Analysis:
City staff has recently updated the Street Safety Plan. Having this plan helps City staff understand where we need to build safety improvements, and it is a requirement to qualify for the state’s City Safety grant program.
The Street Safety Plan takes a systemic approach to improving safety on Olympia’s streets. We focus on collisions involving pedestrians and bicyclists. We have identified the locations where these types of collisions occur. Also, based on the characteristics of those locations, we have identified where they are likely to occur in the future.
We analyze five years’ worth of collision data each time we update the Plan. For this update, we analyzed collisions that happened in 2018-2022. The collision data comes from WSDOT, and it is all collisions reported to law enforcement agencies within the city limits.
City staff will give an overview of the Street Safety Plan and share what we learned from the most recent collision analysis.
