Interim Police Chief Shelby Parker, Olympia Police Department, 360.753.8300

Telli Norton, Senior Human Resources Generalist/Chief Examiner, 360.709.2775

Background

Interim Police Chief Parker is requesting to broaden the experience required in the Police Sergeant Job Classification. Allowing fully commissioned police officers with 12 years of experience to qualify without the required college education is a positive and practical change.  It recognizes the value of real-world experience, broadens opportunities for a more diverse range of candidates, and emphasizes demonstrated skills rather than formal education alone.  Extensive field experience often reflects critical qualities such as sound judgment, problem-solving, adaptability, and leadership.  Academic credentials may not fully capture these attributes.  This shift promotes equity, prioritizes competence, and enables organizations to retain and advance capable officers who have proven themselves through years of service.

Findings:

The proposed change to the minimum qualifications of the Police Sergeant job posting will expand the applicant pool for the department.
