Background and Analysis:
The Community Livability and Public Safety Committee annually reviews the work plans of Council-appointed advisory committees, board and commission and then forwards the Committee’s approval recommendations to the full City Council. At its April 16, 2025 Special Meeting, the Committee reviewed and discussed work plans and accompanying materials from eight of the 12 advisory bodies.
Because of the nature of their work, the following committees do not operate from annual work plans: Design Review Board, Lodging Tax Advisory Committee and the Use of Force Board. The Olympia Metropolitan Park District Advisory Committee submits any work plans to the Olympia Metropolitan Park District Board.
Staff Liaisons from the eight advisory bodies attended the Special Meeting and were available to respond to any questions about the work plans from the members of the Community Livability and Public Safety Committee.
Climate Analysis:
No climate impacts were evident.
Equity Analysis:
Because City Council-appoint boards and commissions offer a ready opportunity to reduce disparities in participation by marginalized communities in the City’s processes and decisions, the City has been intentional about working to increase the racial, age and socio-economic diversity among the community volunteers who make up these advisory committees.
Neighborhood/Community Interests (if known):
Advisory committees are a structured way for community members to share their opinions and perspectives, study issues, and develop recommendations in a focused small group. Their primary purpose is to provide judicious advice, from the perspective of community members to the Olympia City Council.
Financial Impact:
If applicable, listed on individual plans.
Options:
1. Move to approve the 2025 advisory committee, boards, and commissions work plans as recommended by the Community Livability and Public Safety Committee.
2. Move to approve the 2025 advisory committee, boards, and commissions work plans as recommended by the Community Livability and Public Safety Committee with amendments.
