Background and Analysis:
Water Resources/Storm and Surface Water held an art contest for Olympia middle school students to create artwork that informs the community how street sweeping keeps pollution out of our local waterways. Three students’ art drawings were chosen for a decal that covers one side of the new grant funded street sweeper and will also be used on the City’s website, social media, and other outreach materials.
The contest requested artwork depicting one of these clean water messages:
• Clean streets = Clean water
• Keeping Oly clean with this sweeping machine
• Sweeping Olympia Green
• Keeping Oly’s waters clean
• Protecting fish and wildlife one street at a time
• Protecting our streams, lakes, and Puget Sound
• Sweeping pollution out of stormwater’s path
• Your own clean stormwater design
Each selected artist will receive an Art Design Award Certificate, a photo of their artwork on the street sweeper, and City Council recognition. The street sweeper will be on display at Olympia middle schools in 2025 for outreach education and to promote the next street sweeper decal contest.
