Background and Analysis:

Every spring, usually in the third week of May, the City of Olympia joins the APWA and municipalities across North America and around the world in celebrating National Public Works Week, honoring the impact and role that Public Works professionals make on our vibrant community.

In 1960, the APWA received an official endorsement from the United States Senate and organized the first Public Works Week.  Six decades after its establishment, this tradition continues to honor and celebrate the dedicated people of Public Works who serve the public good every day with quiet dedication.

This year’s celebration theme is "Connecting the World Through Public Works."  It highlights the way Public Works professionals connect communities around the world physically, through infrastructure, and inspirationally, through essential services such as transportation, water resources, solid waste, public facilities, fleet, and emergency management.

National Public Works Week raises awareness of and honors the contributions and achievements made by our dedicated professionals in the Olympia Public Works Department.

Additionally, the City of Olympia is receiving an award from the APWA Washington Chapter for the Franklin Street Improvements project downtown.  This project received one of only seven “APWA 2023 Public Works Project of the Year Awards” in Washington State, winning in the category of Transportation Projects under $5 million.  The Franklin Street project enhances walkability, maintains and improves mobility for all modes of transportation, and supports transit through the historic downtown core with significant roadway and urban design improvements.

Winning infrastructure projects promote excellence in construction, management, and administration.  These awards also recognize the partnership between the City of Olympia, our design consultant, KPG Psomas, our contractor, Sound Pacific Construction, and the cooperative achievements they made on behalf of our community.
