Background and Analysis:
The City of Olympia’s Juneteenth Proclamation affirms the community’s commitment to commemorating the abolition of slavery and recognizing the legacy of Black Americans. Rooted in the historic events of June 19. 1865, when news of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, Juneteenth symbolizes liberation, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of justice.
The proclamation not only honors that pivotal moment in American history but also underscores the significance of Juneteenth as a cultural and historical milestone celebrated by Black communities for more than 150 years.
The City of Olympia’s recognition is further grounded in local heritage, acknowledging the long-standing contributions of Black residents and community groups who have uplifted Juneteenth for over four decades.
