Background and Analysis:

The Washington state Growth Management Act requires each jurisdiction to create and update long term comprehensive plans. Olympia’s Comprehensive Plan, named Olympia 2045, began work in 2023 and is due by December 2025. The City’s approach is for each chapter to include an equity analysis and the Council has asked the Social Justice and Equity Commission (SJEC) to review each chapter.

This meeting will begin with an overview of Olympia 2045, it’s requirements, the chapters, the overall process and where the SJEC will be involved. Following that, there will be presentation from two chapters - Parks, Arts, and Recreation and Economy - focusing on their equity analysis and asking the commission for feedback.

Climate Analysis:

Olympia 2045 incudes a chapter on Climate that is itself a comprehensive climate analysis and the City’s plan to address climate mitigation and resiliency. The climate chapter will be presented at a future meeting.

Equity Analysis:

A comprehensive plan provides guidance and direction for the overall work of the City. Having equity analysis in each chapter and having the SJEC review that analysis will help to ensure more perspectives are considered, to identify community groups to outreach to and remove barriers that would prevent the everyone from equitably accessing the benefits of city services, programs and activities.

Neighborhood/Community Interests (if known):

The community will benefit from city decision makers giving more consideration to who is benefitting or burdened by policy and being able to make more informed decisions.
