Background and Analysis:
The Storm and Surface Water Utility held its second art contest inviting Olympia middle school students to create artwork that educates the community about how street sweeping protects local waterways from pollution. Last year’s winning artwork is featured on one side of the new grant-funded street sweeper. This year, two additional students’ designs will be featured on the opposite side of the sweeper and used on the City’s website, social media, and other outreach materials.
The contest requested students illustrate artwork depicting one of these clean water messages:
• Clean streets = Clean water
• Keeping Oly clean with this sweeping machine
• Sweeping Olympia Green
• Keeping Oly’s waters clean
• Protecting fish and wildlife one street at a time
• Protecting our streams, lakes, and Puget Sound
• Sweeping pollution out of stormwater’s path
• Their own clean stormwater design
Each selected artist will receive:
• An Art Design Award Certificate
• A photo of their artwork displayed on the street sweeper
• Official recognition by Olympia City Council
The street sweeper featuring the new artwork will be on display in the receiving bay at Olympia City Hall prior to the September 30, 2025 City Council meeting.
Selected artists:
• Jackson Schaub, Washington Middle School
• Aalena Lucas, Washington Middle School
