Background and Analysis:

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer+ (LGBTQIA+) Pride Month is celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan.

Olympia has a long history of celebrating and supporting the diversity of all its community members and visitors. In 1991 Capital City Pride organized the first small town Pride outside of Seattle and has continued its annual celebration since. The City, its employees, elected officials, community members, places of business and visitors have enthusiastically participated in Pride festivities every year including the years the event was virtual due to the pandemic.

The City of Olympia is in their second year of the Crosswalk Transformation pilot project. In 2023 the crosswalks at 5th and Washington were painted with the Transgender Flag in honor of Pride month and to show our commitment to Olympia’s Transgender community. On June 1, 2024, the City of Olympia will be commemorating the second crosswalk painting at Legion and Columbia painted with the colors of the original 8-color version of the Pride Rainbow Flag.

The 2024 Capital City Pride festivities and events will take place in person on June 22, 28, 29 and 30. The theme this year is “All Bodies are Pride”.

Proclaiming June as LGBTQIA+ Pride Month and June 29 and 30 as Capital Pride Weekend continues the City’s support and celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Climate Analysis:

No impacts to any of the climate mitigation sectors.

Equity Analysis:

This recognition raises awareness about the contributions and experiences of generations of LGBTQIA+ communities here in the Pacific Northwest and across the nation. This recognition benefits Olympia residents as well as those in neighboring communities by increasing a sense of belonging and inclusion.
