Background and Analysis:

The Olympia Police Department objectively evaluates the use of force by its members to ensure that their authority is used lawfully, appropriately and is consistent with training and policy. The Department utilizes a Use of Force Review Board to investigate and review circumstances surrounding every intentional discharge of a firearm, excluding training, recreational use or dispatching injured animals with sergeant approval. This seven-member review board is composed of internal and external law enforcement professionals and a community representative.

As part of the briefing there will be an overview of the critical incident that occurred in March 2022, review the Department’s internal review process, and explain the community member’s role on the review board.

The Community Representatives that serve on the Use of Force Review Board will discuss their experience regarding the processing and work related to Board.
