Background and Analysis:

Since 1985, the first week of May has been celebrated as Public Service Recognition Week.  The employees of the City of Olympia work each day to deliver essential services to residents and to take on the most important and formidable challenges facing our City. They do these, and much more, with dedication, ingenuity, and a strong sense of commitment to the well-being of the City. In 2025, Public Service Recognition Week is celebrated on May 4-10.

Through the month of May, several specific groups of public servants are also honored, and we wish to call out City employees who serve the community in those fields:

Professional Municipal Clerk Week is May 4-10, 2025

Economic Development Week is May 11-17, 2025

National Police Week is May 11-17, 2025

EMS Week is May 18-24, 2025

National Public Works Week is May 18-24, 2025

We also recognize that the City of Olympia is home to the largest body of state government employees in Washington, and their service to the state and contributions to the City enrich the livability and vitality of both. We honor their service during Public Service Recognition Week and beyond.

We also acknowledge those serving the public at the Federal level, whose work, value and contributions have in recent months been treated with skepticism and scorn. We see their service and give it the respect and honor it deserves.

Climate Analysis:

No impacts to any of the climate mitigation sectors.

Equity Analysis:

Public service and public servants reflect the full diversity of our community and our nation. Historically, since the early 20th Century, public sector jobs, such as in the postal service, provided steady, valuable work for people of color.
