Background and Analysis:

Olympia has six bridges under its jurisdiction and responsibility.  They include the Olympia-Yashiro (4th Avenue), 5th Avenue, Priest Point Park, Percival Creek, RW Johnson Road, and Boulevard Road bridges.  The City is required to have these bridges regularly inspected on a periodic basis, approximately every two years.

Bridge safety inspections require specialized knowledge and experience.  WSDOT has the qualified personnel, equipment, and expertise to perform the City’s needed bridge inspection work over the next 10 years.

Neighborhood/Community Interests (if known):

Regularly inspecting Olympia’s bridges helps keep the traveling public safe.

Options:

1.                     Approve a Resolution authorizing a bridge inspection agreement with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).  Bridge inspections will take place this Fall as planned.

2.                     Approve a Resolution with modifications authorizing a bridge inspection agreement with WSDOT.  Bridge inspections will take place as planned.

3.                     Do not approve a Resolution authorizing a bride inspection agreement with WSDOT.  The City will need to find an alternative way to conduct needed bridge safety inspections.

Financial Impact:

This year’s bridge inspections will cost approximately $7,600.  Funds are available in the Public Works Engineering operating budget to complete this work.
