Background and Analysis:

The City of Olympia provides Open Public Meetings Act (OPMA) training to all members of its council advisory committees to ensure transparency and adherence to state law. As part of this requirement, OMPD Advisory Committee members will view a short video to stay informed about their responsibilities under the OPMA and remain in compliance.

The OPMA ensures that the public has access to the meetings and decision-making processes of governmental bodies, reinforcing accountability and public trust.

Climate Analysis:

While the OPMA training itself does not have a direct impact on climate, the OMPD Advisory Committee plays an important role in the oversight of Metropolitan Park District (MPD) funding. Many funded projects support climate resilience by promoting carbon sequestration and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. For example, the Park Stewardship Program-fully funded through MPD resources-supports the management and restoration of Olympia’s natural areas.

Equity Analysis:

MPD funding helps deliver services and improvements that benefit the broader community, including residents in underserved areas. The City of Olympia is committed to advancing Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging. The Parks Department applies an equity-based system to prioritize investments in areas with the greatest need. Keeping committee members informed and compliant through OPMA training supports equitable governance practices.

Neighborhood/Community Interests (if known):

The YES Olympia Parks coalition was instrumental in the formation of the Olympia Metropolitan Park District and continues to follow the activities of the OMPD Advisory Committee and Board. Public confidence in the District’s operations is supported by ongoing compliance with transparency laws such as the OPMA.

Financial Impact:

None.
