Background and Analysis:

Advisory Committee Work Plans -

Each year advisory committees prepare a work plan for initial review by General Government Committee before consideration by the full Council.  Two years ago, Council changed the date so that the committees' work year begins April 1. The date coincides with the appointment of new members and also allows time after the first of the year for committees to consider goals and priorities identifed at Council's annual retreat.

Potential dates if you follow this same practice:

Friday, February 1 - work plans submitted to Executive Office (allows time in January for committees to finalize plans)

Tuesday, February 19 - General Government Committee reviews work plans

March 5 or 12 - Work plans with General Government committee recommendation approved on Council Consent calendar

Advisory Committee Recruitment, Interviews, and Appointment -

For several years, General Government Committee has attempted to follow this schedule:

December 1 to mid-January - Advertise and accept applications

February and early March - Interview applicants

by March 31 - forward recommendations to full Council (Tuesday, March 26 is the last 2013 meeting that month)

It would be helpful to set tentative interview dates prior to recruitment so that applicants know what to expect, with the understanding that membership on General Government Committee may change in 2013. With 10-minute interviews, you can visit with 9-10 individuals in two hours, with 20 minutes to prepare questions.

Do you wish to interview on consecutive days or spread out the interview days over several weeks?

Also, do you wish to continue the practice of inviting the committee chair or chair's delegate to participate in the interviews?

The following 24 terms end March 31, 2013.  Unknown at this time is whether all of these individuals will seek reappointment and whether anyone else will resign in the interim.
