Background and Analysis:
There are multiple upcoming events and partnerships that we will discuss if we would like to attend, who will volunteer, and what work is needed. Please look at each opportunity below and sign up for shifts you are available to help with/be ready to decide if you will vote to committing to these events and supporting in some way.
September 4-6 Sandman information booth at Harbor Days
• We have committed to attending and having volunteers sit at a booth.
• Varying hours from 10am to 7pm, see shift suggestions on sign up sheet.
• Sign up sheet here: <https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PB9QZQ5PSW_9HPhKHZOvrQjypbVunvA0QmnH3irWQGA/edit?usp=drive_link>
• Booth will have an activity planned by Historic Maritime Foundation (HMF)
• Expectation is to attend and be at the booth. No required planning or coordination for the booth programming etc. HMF will be nearby to answer specific Sandman questions.
September 12- Thurston County Heritage Day
• 10am-2pm at the Thurston County Fairgrounds in Heritage Hall
• I will not be able to attend, and we have not yet committed to the event
• The event will acknowledge the 2026 TC Heritage Award, celebrate the County’s 174th birthday with refreshments, hear a talk from TC Historic Commissioner/Author Ira Weslet Kitmacher, and have entertainment from a South Sound Story Guild storyteller.
• I do not believe you would need to bring your own table or chairs
• I will provide you with handouts and table display info
• Do we want to RSVP?
September 13- South Capitol Neighborhood Association annual BBQ/Picnic
• 2-5pm at Lincoln Elementary
• I will not be able to attend, and we have not yet committed to the event
• Volunteer (you) would need to set up a table and chairs that could be provided by the City.
• I would provide you with informational brochures/handouts
• They will likely be curious about the idea of a local district listing and what the benefits are, but that does not need to be the focus of the booth materials.
• Do we want to RSVP? I need to know before the end of the month.
PENDING- September 25/30/Oct1?- One of these dates will be chosen for Historic Trivia
• There is a trivia planning committee (MORE Committee + a OHS/BHM member) working on the event.
• You will be requested to volunteer by attending the event and bringing a friend or two! More info to come on time/location/specifics
October 2-3- Arts Walk
• Friday 5-10pm, Saturday 12-6pm
• Plan will be to collect illustrations for a historic preservation zine! I’m thinking the prompt will be “draw something that makes you think of Olympia, WA” and the top voted images will be part of an upcoming publication we will be working on.
• I will be there with drawing materials and a display on “what is a zine” or maybe the “history of zines” in olympia if I can get enough information by then.

Neighborhood/Community Interests (if known):
Downtown Neighborhood Association, Maritime community throughout Olympia, South Capitol Neighborhood Association
Options:
1. Review events and vote to confirm which events the Commission will attend and who will volunteer
2. Request more information on the events and commit to responding on attendance before the end of the month
3. Do not discuss Commission involvement with upcoming events and activities
Financial Impact:
All of the events would not require funds to execute, and materials and booth displays would be reused from previous events. The Arts Walk booth craft supplies would be reused from previous events.
