Whether to receive a report on 2017 Code Enforcement year-in-review.

Background and Analysis:

The Code Enforcement Division of the Community Planning & Development Department helps maintain or improve the quality of life in our community by enforcing laws and codes targeted at solving specific problems within the community.

 

2017 Statistics

Since December 1, 2016:

 

                     358 new cases have been created, including;

o                     67 homeless encampments

o                     66 sign code violations

o                     51 trash and debris cases

o                     42 overgrown/encroaching vegetation cases

o                     10 dangerous building/nuisance structure cases

 

                     278 cases have been successfully closed

                     1,181 inspections were performed

                     3,118 other case actions were performed; including phone calls, emails, letters and notices

                     Not all phone calls are case associated.  In 2017, the Code Enforcement Officers handled 5,365 phone calls

 

In addition, during 2017 the Code Enforcement Division:

 

                     Implemented policies for identifying, tagging, recording, and storing potentially valuable personal property left in encampments

                     Worked with contractors to coordinate clean-up of large number of encampments

                     Worked with the Planning Division to develop new sign code compliance with Supreme Court of the United Stated decision (Reed vs. Town of Gilbert) on sign code enforcement

                     Worked with the Legal Department on researching Vacant Property Registration ordinances

                     Attended the Spring and Autumn trainings by the Washington Association of Code Enforcement

                     Worked with neighborhood association representatives, Olympia Police Department, and Legal Department to review and improve nuisance code

                     Began the process of hiring and on-boarding a third Code Enforcement Officer as a result of voter approved Public Safety ad velorum tax.
