Background and Analysis:

The purpose of the SEEK Fund is to increase access to quality outdoor programming for youth and communities who have historically been underserved and who have been most impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Summer Kids in Parks Program (SKIPP) Summer Lunch Program - $5,784

SKIPP is a long-standing free summer program for anyone in the community ages 6-12. Participants enjoy a free lunch (in partnership with OSD) then experience outside games, walking field trips, environmental education, bicycle and pedestrian safety training, gardening and more. The SEEK funding allows us to hire on two additional staff at the SKIPP locations, so we are able to serve more children through the program.

SEEK Outdoor Program - $11,539

Working with Marshall Middle School we will be taking a group of youth (ages 11-14) on afterschool trips and a few Saturday field trips. Participants will experience outdoor activities such as kayaking, hiking, rock climbing (indoor) and skateboarding. The purpose of this program is to introduce the youth to healthy outdoor activities, while also educating them on first aide, wildlife identification and confidence building.

The Bridge Songwriting Workshops - $24,182

The Bridge will host two separate six-week songwriting workshop series at the Thurston County Juvenile Court and Haven House for youth ages 12-18. The Juvenile Court program with act as an alternative to incarceration, youth who are convicted of crimes will have the opportunity to participate in The Bridge’s songwriting workshops as part of a diversion program. Haven House is a group home for youth who have been removed from their original homes due to crisis situations. Youth who are current residents at the group home will participate in these workshops.

The grants total $41,505.

Neighborhood/Community Interests (if known):

Olympia School District students at Marshall Middle School benefit from the in-school opportunities through the Outdoor Program.

Neighborhoods that qualify to host the SKIPP/Lunch program will benefit by having two additional employees per site for the summer to supervise and create a safe and enjoyable recreation experience.
