Report

Issue:

Staff from Community Planning and Development will provide an update on the City’s Comprehensive Plan Update process and the Action Plan, the next phase for how to implement the new Comprehensive Plan.

Staff Contact:

Background and Analysis:

This year Olympia is adopting a new Comprehensive Plan with updated goals and policies that reflect our community’s vision. This process is called “Imagine Olympia.”

The City Council is currently reviewing the Draft Comprehensive Plan, which was recommended by the Olympia Planning Commission in December 2013. The

Council’s review will result in a public hearing draft on which the community will be asked to comment.  For more information on Imagine Olympia, please visit the Imagine Olympia hyperlink listed above.

Early in the process, the City Council identified a vital next step: to ensure that the goals and policies become reality and have real “on the ground” impact by creating an “Action Plan.”  This next phase is called “Imagine Olympia | Take Action”.

Work has begun on identifying the programs, projects and activities that will turn the Comprehensive Plan into reality and ways in which to measure the difference we make over the next six years.  Community feedback received during Imagine Olympia has provided many excellent programs, projects, and activities community members would like to see happen to carry out the Comprehensive Plan.

Staff will share how those ideas are now being carefully reviewed and considered for inclusion in a draft Action Plan, a current timeline for completion of a draft Action Plan, and what new ways will be available later this year to get involved in this process.

Neighborhood/Community Interests (if known):

Both the Comprehensive Plan and Action Plan are of interest to neighborhoods and community groups citywide.

Financial Impact:

None; the Comprehensive Plan update and Action Plan are budgeted as elements of Community Planning and Development’s 2014 work plan.

Staff Recommendation:

Consider ways in which to participate in reviewing and commenting on the City Council Public Hearing Draft of the Comprehensive Plan when it is released this summer, and the Draft Action Plan when it becomes available in the fall.
