Background and Analysis:
The Youth Council will provide an update to the Community Livability and Public Safety Committee on August 26, 2026. The presentation will provide Committee members with an overview of the Youth Council's accomplishments during the current year, highlight the contributions of Youth Council members, and provide an opportunity to consider the appointment of new Youth Council members.
The August 26 presentation will also serve as the basis for an update to the full City Council at its September 15, 2026, meeting. The September 15 presentation will provide Council with an opportunity to hear directly about the Youth Council's work and accomplishments and to consider the recommended appointments for the upcoming Youth Council term.
At this meeting, the Youth Council and staff will plan the content and format of both presentations. Planning in advance will allow the Youth Council to identify the accomplishments and priorities it would like to highlight and ensure that the information presented to the Committee and City Council is consistent and appropriately tailored to each audience.
The presentations are anticipated to include:
• Youth Council accomplishments: Highlight key projects, activities, recommendations, and areas of work completed during the current year.
• Recruitment and appointments: Provide an overview of the recruitment process for 2026 and discuss the recommended new members.
• Committee and Council action: Request consideration and approval of the recommended Youth Council appointments. The August 26 Committee presentation will provide an opportunity to receive feedback from the Community Livability and Public Safety Committee. That feedback can then be incorporated into the presentation to the full City Council on September 15.
The September 15 City Council meeting is also anticipated to include the formal appointment of the new Youth Council members, allowing the new members to begin their term and participate in the planned onboarding retreat.
Climate Analysis:
This item will not affect climate actions.
Equity Analysis:
The Youth Council provides an opportunity for young people to participate directly in City government and bring youth perspectives into policy discussions. Highlighting the Council's accomplishments and providing a transparent appointment process supports meaningful youth participation in local government.
Staff will seek to ensure that the presentations reflect the diversity of Youth Council members and the range of perspectives represented through the recruitment process.
Neighborhood/Community Interests (if known):
The Youth Council provides a direct avenue for youth perspectives to be shared with City leaders and incorporated into discussions about issues affecting the Olympia community. The August 26 Committee presentation and September 15 City Council update will provide opportunities to share the Council's work, recognize the contributions of current members, and welcome new members.
