Background and Analysis:
Each May, the City of Olympia recognizes Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month-an opportunity to honor the history, cultures, and contributions of AANHPI communities across the country and within our city. From the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants in the 1800s to the essential role of Chinese laborers in building the transcontinental railroad, AANHPI individuals have helped shape the United States. In Washington State, communities representing 48 Asian and Pacific Island nations continue to enrich the social and cultural fabric of the region.

In Olympia, AANHPI residents are a vital part of the city's identity, contributing to its growth and vibrancy through leadership, creativity, and service. While celebrating these accomplishments, the City of Olympia also acknowledges the challenges AANHPI communities have faced and reaffirms its commitment to equity and inclusion. The City of Olympia is proud to sponsor the AANHPI Heritage Festival on May 23, 2026, at South Puget Sound Community College - Lacey Campus, which will be hosted by the Asian Pacific Islander Coalition of South Puget Sound-a celebration of culture, unity, and community through storytelling, art, and shared experiences.
