Background and Analysis:

The Social Justice & Equity Commission’s Work Plan includes developing a recommendation for City Council’s consideration on community involvement in law enforcement. This agenda item will include presentation and facilitated discussion to support Commissioners in learning about and discussing the attributes of community involvement and oversight in law enforcement. 

 

Climate Analysis:

This project is not expected to have an impact on greenhouse gas emissions.

 

Equity Analysis:

The process to develop a final recommendation will engage community members with a diversity of lived experiences and perspectives, including marginalized community members and those who have been impacted by policing. The recommendation should address ensuring processes are accessible to all; investigations are fair, thorough, objective and without bias; transparency and accountability; and improved policies, practices and training.

 

Neighborhood/Community Interests (if known):

Community groups, those most impacted by policing and underrepresented community groups have requested more community involvement in law enforcement with a goal of building trust and legitimacy in the City’s public safety system.

Financial Impact:

The estimated cost for this project is $90,250 and is appropriated in the 2023 operating budget.
