Background and Analysis:
Overdose has become an urgent public health crisis across Washington State and in Thurston County. Recent data from Thurston County Public Health and Social Services (PHSS) show a significant rise in overdose-related deaths and emergency responses in our region, particularly involving fentanyl-a synthetic opioid that is increasingly present in counterfeit pills and other illicit drugs.

In response to this alarming trend, youth are interested in expanding awareness regarding prevention and treatment services.

Equity Analysis:
The opioid crisis affects individuals across all demographics, but data from Thurston County and national research indicate that certain populations-especially youth experiencing homelessness, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) youth, LGBTQIA+ youth, and those impacted by poverty or trauma-are disproportionately vulnerable to substance misuse and overdose. These disparities are often compounded by systemic barriers to healthcare, mental health services, housing, and culturally responsive support.
