Background and Analysis:
Salmon Stewards was created by the City of Olympia in 1999 as a Stream Team education and outreach program. The program would not be possible without staff support and technical assistance from Washington State Departments of Fish and Wildlife, Enterprise Services, and Natural Resources, as well as the Squaxin Island Tribe.
The program is designed to encourage one-on-one conversations between the Salmon Stewards and the public about local salmon populations. The trained Salmon Stewards provide information about salmon life cycles and habitat needs. As migrating salmon return to Olympia streams and rivers, Salmon Stewards host viewing stations at the 5th Avenue Dam in downtown Olympia, Tumwater Falls, and McLane Creek.
Each year, 15 to 25 stewards provide at least 400 hours of their time to an estimated 3,000 people. Stewards attend eight hours of classroom and additional on-site trainings. In addition, special lectures are held for both stewards and the general public.
Staff will share a brief overview of the program and introduce volunteers.
