Background and Analysis:
OPARD runs the highest volume of summer camps for youth in Thurston County. We serve over 500 campers per week, across 20-25 different camps per week. We hire 70 seasonal staff members to run the in-house camps and also oversee many contracted camps.
Climate Analysis:
Through our outdoor camps, participants engage in activities that highlight the importance of sustainability, climate resilience, and conservation. By incorporating climate awareness into our camp activities, we aim to inspire a deeper understanding of environmental challenges and encourage positive, climate-conscious behaviors within the community.
Equity Analysis:
We offer 2 free camps during the summer that include recreation and food components. We also offer a few other low-cost camps through contractors. In addition to offering some cost friendly camps, we have a scholarship program that allows low income families to register for camps before they are open to the general public
Neighborhood/Community Interests (if known):
Our camps take place in multiple schools and recreation facilities in different parts of the city and are close to many different neighborhoods.
Options:
Informational briefing, no decision required.
Financial Impact:
Our summer camps are largely fee-based and bring in over $900,000, which is almost 2/3 of the department’s annual earned revenue.
