Background and Analysis:
This project would install new plastic pavement markings at six locations around Olympia. The project locations include parts of Capitol Way, Columbia Street, Cooper Point Road, Black Lake Boulevard, and State Avenue, and roundabouts at Jefferson Street and 14th Avenue, and Boulevard Road and Log Cabin Road. The project would provide safety improvements identified in Olympia's Street Safety and Transportation Master Plans.
The project would remove worn pavement markings and install new plastic pavement markings. Pavement markings tend to wear over time and require maintenance. The new plastic pavement markings would be clear, bright, and more durable than paint.
More than one contractor expressed interest in the project, but just one contractor submitted a bid. Getting more than one bid can help to reduce the project cost and know that the cost is fair. The bid was higher than expected. Staff believes awarding the bid would make the overall cost for the project too high.
Rejecting the bid would mean staff would continue to maintain the existing pavement markings. Staff would look at getting bids again next year after reevaluating the size, scope, and extents of the project.

The plastic striping makes our streets safer for people walking, biking, and driving. This could encourage more people to walk and bike, which can reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
