Background and Analysis:
Mobility is essential for ensuring equitable access to employment, education, health care, and community life. Yet, many Olympia residents face challenges in accessing transportation due to financial barriers, age, disability, or lack of infrastructure supporting alternatives to driving. Car ownership, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA), costs over $12,000 annually, an amount that exceeds recommended spending levels for many households, particularly those earning below the national median income.
In response, the City of Olympia continues to invest in a safe, connected, and multimodal transportation system that serves people of all ages and abilities. These investments are guided by the City’s Transportation Master Plan, which emphasizes walking, rolling, biking, and public transit as key components of a sustainable and equitable transportation future.
Week Without Driving is an initiative that invites elected officials, city staff, and community members to voluntarily experience Olympia without using a personal vehicle. The goal is to build empathy and understanding of the barriers faced by non-drivers, and to highlight opportunities for improving transportation access and safety throughout the city.
This proclamation aligns with the City’s broader commitments to equity, climate action, health, and livability.
