Issue:
This will be the second year the personal use fireworks ban in Olympia will affect July 4 celebrations. This is an opportunity to remind the general public of that ban and encourage alternate celebrations including professionally operated public fireworks displays. An ordinance banning personal fireworks in the City of Olympia was passed in November 2011 with a one year delay in effective date, per state law.

Background and Analysis:
In December 2011, the Olympia City Council passed an ordinance banning the use of personal fireworks within the City. This followed an advisory vote by the citizens on the November 8, 2011 ballot supporting a ban, 57.14% - 42.86%. The voter approved ban went into effect January 1, 2013.

Attached is a flyer issued jointly by the cities of Lacey and Olympia describing the ban and alternate celebration ideas including professionally operated public fireworks displays.
