Background and Analysis:
In May 2014, the City Council approved an $11,971,000 Drinking Water State Revolving Fund loan (DWSRF), from the Washington State Department of Health. The loan is to fund the water storage tank design and construction. The new 3.6 million gallon water tank will be built near LBA Park and serve over 12,500 homes and businesses in southeast Olympia beginning in 2016. The new tank will also provide back up to the Hoffman Road water tank. This will allow the Hoffman tank to be taken out of service as needed for necessary maintenance.

Public Works Engineering staff will design the water pipe and access road. Our plan is to hire a consultant with structural expertise to design the new water tank. Staff selected Gray & Osborne Inc. through a competitive process. They were chosen based on their extensive design experience of water tanks. They previously designed the City's Bush Street water storage tank. The firm has designed over twenty similar water storage tanks in the last ten years.

The design is currently scheduled to begin in January 2015. We expect construction of the new tank to be complete by fall 2016.
