Background and Analysis:
On July 23, the Olympia City Council designated the downtown artesian well property as a City park. Consistent with OMC 12.62.050, Naming of Parks and Park Facilities (Attachment #1) Council asked the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee (PRAC) to recommend a name for the new park.

The PRAC and Parks staff conducted a public outreach effort to solicit names for the new park. The effort included news releases, e-mails, website notice, solicitation from neighborhoods, and other outreach as described in Attachment #2. A large number of potential names were received (Attachment #3.

On September 5, 2013 PRAC held a public hearing on the names submitted for consideration. After discussion, the PRAC voted unanimously to recommend Artesian Commons as the name for the new park. PRAC believed the name represented the main feature of the park (the artesian well) and suggested a community gathering place (commons) where community members could gather. PRAC also felt that the proposed name was historically reflective and was short enough to be widely used and fit easily on park signage. The PRAC letter is included as Attachment #4.
