Background and Analysis:
DOCOMOMO is the International Committee for Documentation and Conservation of buildings, sites and neighborhoods of the Modern Movement. This non-profit organization advocates worldwide for the appreciation and protection of Modernist heritage and has hundreds of institutional members and chapters. DOCOMOMO Western Washington (DOCOMOMO WEWA) is one of 21 local chapters in the U.S.
Each year, the international organization encourages local chapters to hold a Tour Day, when special mid-century properties that are ordinarily closed to the public throw their doors open to visitors. DOCOMOMO WEWA commonly holds this event in the Seattle area (Attachment 1) but has also organized the event in other Western Washington communities. This year, the organization’s Tour Day will take place in Olympia for the first time.
Ms. Sadlier will present an overview of the upcoming event, scheduled for the afternoon of Saturday, October 7, 2017. Heritage Commissioners are encouraged to join colleagues at the State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation in taking part in the event as local hosts.
