Background and Analysis:
In July of 2024 the City Council approved recommendations from the Social Justice and Equity Commission (SJEC) for updates to the City’s police oversight system. These recommendations included expanded responsibilities for the Civilian Police Auditor. In November of 2024 the City launched a recruitment process to hire an auditor to provide these expanded services, and in May of 2025 the City Council unanimously voted to contract with OIR Group as the new Civilian Police Auditor.
One expansion of the auditor’s role is requirements for community engagement and education around the work of the Auditor. On October 16, 2025 OIR Group will be visiting Olympia in-person to meet with stakeholders and cohost an Open House, with the Community Policing Board, to engage with community members around their work. Prior to the Open House OIR Group will be joining the Community Livability and Public Safety Committee (CLPS) for an informal dinner and discussion to strengthen the working relationship between the auditor and CLPS.
