Background and Analysis:
Homes First!, formed in 1990, grew out of a task force concerned about the homeless, whose members joined with other community residents concerned about the problem of affordable housing. Homes First is now working to increase the supply of affordable housing for community members in need. The mission of Homes First is to provide safe, healthy, affordable rental homes for those who need them most.
Homes First is
Homes First provides affordable rental housing, serving all those in Thurston County living at less than 80% area median income. Homes First has been acquiring, renovating, and preserving affordable rental housing for low income families, individuals, and people with special needs. Currently Homes First owns and manages 26 properties with 71 rental units, providing affordable housing for 250 tenants. Income from rent goes to maintain the housing, provide staff oversight, and help fund future affordable housing projects.
Homes First is a Community-Based Housing Development Organization (CHDO)-a special status which the government grants to nonprofit community organizations engaged in housing development activities that benefit low- and moderate-income families.
This year, Homes First is celebrating their 30th Anniversary of providing housing to the community.
