Utility Finances - Public Involvement

Report

UAC Deliverable:

Briefing only

Staff Contact:

Andy Haub, Water Resources Director, 360.753.8475

Background and Analysis:

The UAC has expressed interest in the public involvement work of the four City Utilities.  Public involvement seeks to solicit community input on our programs and the decisions that steer us.  The UAC is an example of public involvement.

Direct efforts to facilitate public involvement are modest compared to our day-to-day engagement with our community in the related arena of education and outreach.   Education and outreach seek to inform our community and sometimes influence individual behaviors and decisions.  Fulfilling Utility goals often relies upon individual action.

Public involvement shapes Utility goals, while education and outreach help enact the goals. However, it’s a fine line. Community knowledge of our work and needs can result in direct, sometimes informal, involvement in programs and decisions.

The UAC will receive an overview of both involvement and education work of the four Utilities.  Staff will solicit comments and ideas to improve both.  Input will help shape our programs in the near and long term.
