Background and Analysis:

The current park naming ordinance states, in part, “Parks and park facilities shall not ordinarily be named for living persons unless they have stipulated the name as a condition of donation.”

The City of Lacey has expressed interest in re-naming the Lacey Woodland Trail the “Karen Frazier Trail” in honor of Senator Karen Frazier to honor the Senator’s contribution to the region and her long history of public service.  The Woodland Trail is an interconnected regional trail system which includes the Lacey Woodland Trail and the Olympia Woodland Trail.  In light of this, if The City of Lacey re-names their portion the “Karen Frazier Trail”, Olympia City Council has expressed interest in re-naming Olympia’s portion with the same name.  The current ordinance would not allow this since Senator Frazier is a living person.
