Issue:
Whether to approve the proposed updates to the Heritage Commission’s bylaws
Staff Contact:
Brittany Gillia, Historic Preservation Officer, Community Planning & Economic Development Department, 360.753.8427
Presenter(s):
Commissioner William Cotter
Background and Analysis:
The Heritage Commission bylaws were last revised on September 26, 2007. Since this date, there have been several organizational changes related to the program that were no longer reflected in the bylaws. The proposed update is meant to correct various clerical errors and grammatical or procedural misalignments but is not meant to be a proposal to shift away from current operations.
The proposed updates reflect the current meeting location and hybrid meeting capabilities, clarity on the Joint Review Committee procedure, and bringing general expectations in line with City Council Advisory Committee standards. Language has been included to clarify that volunteers may be involved with committee work but are not allowed to participate on the Heritage Review Committee due to it’s authority to conduct formal Commission business.
A future update would be anticipated in the event of changes to Olympia Municipal Code Chapter 18.12 Historic Preservation.
