Background and Analysis:
The purpose of the Social Justice & Equity Commission (SJEC) is to "eliminate racism and fulfill human rights for a just and equitable Olympia for all people." The Commission works to fulfill this purpose by advising the City Council and City staff, assisting with community outreach, and recommending approaches to address discrimination in our community.
In 2023 the City contracted with Truclusion to research and report back to the City on experiences of discrimination in our community. Their research was published in the Experiences of Discrimination in Olympia, Washington Report. The full report is available on the City's website.
At the October 2025 SJEC retreat commissioners continued discussions from their 2024 retreat on the findings of the Experiences of Discrimination Report, and potential strategies and action areas. Staff collated the feedback from the retreat discussions and created a draft framework for the commission. The purpose of the draft framework is to guide how the Social Justice and Equity Commission fulfills its mission, addresses the findings of the report, and supports the advancement of equity in the City of Olympia.
