Background and Analysis:
On September 30, 2019, the City of Olympia was notified that had been awarded a $600,000 Brownfield Assessment Grant. This funding has been used to inventory, characterize, assess, and conduct cleanup planning and community involvement related activities for brownfield sites in the Olympia area.

The grant had been specifically called out in the Downtown Strategy as an action that could address some of the barriers associated with developing on potential brownfield sites. There were no matching funds required for this grant.

The City had three years to spend these funds and has successfully utilized these funds on 20 sites throughout Olympia. To date with this grant, we have completed or are actively working on 17 Phase I Environment Site Assessments (ESAs), 11 Phase II ESAs (including two supplemental Phase II ESAs), and one cleanup plan.
