Presenter(s):

Mark Rentfrow, Downtown Liaison

Background and Analysis:

The 2018 PBIA Budget includes $1,500 for cigarette butt collector maintenance. These have needed to be regularly repaired as people break into them to access the butts. The PBIA has recently funded repairs that aim to make the collectors harder to break into.

Downtown Liaison Mark Rentfrow will share information he recently received about a different type of cigarette butt collector that may work in downtown. Staff would like to know if the Board is interested in trying out some of these new collectors (aka directing some of the maintenance funds toward their purchase.) The cost is $75 per container, and they come in packs of three. More information will be provided at the meeting.

At the February 28 General Government meeting, the Committee’s Chair Jessica Bateman asked Chair Ruse about the PBIA’s cigarette butt collector funds. She has noticed piles of butts accumulating in the alley behind the Spar restaurant, and is especially concerned about pollution entering the stream drains. She suggested reaching out to businesses about installing butt collectors in high use areas, such as where employees take smoke breaks.
