Report

Issue:

Annual end-of-calendar-year review of Commission activities and issues

Presenter:

Discussion to be led by Planning Commission officers

Background and Analysis:

This agenda item is an opportunity to look back over the last twelve months of Planning Commission activities. Unlike the Commission’s annual retreat which generally focuses on making process improvements, this agenda item is a more informal review of the year.

The Commission held 20 regular meetings and a retreat in 2015, plus a half dozen subcommittee meetings and other gatherings. Among other activities this year, the Commission:

Participated in scoping of the Downtown Strategy

Recommended code amendments related to veterinary clinics, the rezone process, and clarification of height limits near the Olympia Avenue historic district

Participated in the Thurston Regional Planning Council’s Urban Corridor ‘Conference of Commissions’

Reviewed an update of the City’s wireless communication faculties code

Provided liaisons to other advisory committees

Hosted informational briefings on topics including off-street parking codes, downtown transportation, site contamination, SEPA processes and Tacoma’s waterfront redevelopment

Examined issues related to the design review process

Participated in creating an ‘Action Plan’ for implementing the Comprehensive Plan

Reviewed and issued recommendations regarding the annual Capital Facilities Plan update

Reviewed a set of annual 2015 Comprehensive Plan amendments and initiated review of amendments in 2016

Led a review of Neighborhood Centers issues

Discussion will be facilitated by Commission leadership and include recognition that members Roger Horn and Jessica Bateman are resigning at end of year.
