Background and Analysis:

At its November meeting, the BPAC assigned committee member Matt Schierholtz as its representative and Travis Millar as an alternate to serve on the Safe Schools Funding Steering Committee, which is tasked to identify projects for the Olympia School District’s four-year technology and safety levy. This levy set aside nearly $2 million to improve walking, rolling, and biking routes to school.

The committee held its first meeting February 24th, where school district and city staff shared a potential framework for improvements. Committee members also shared their priorities for this work. Representative Schierholtz led a discussion with BPAC at its March meeting.

The steering committee reconvened for its second meeting on April 28th, where it identified three feasible projects for these funds:

Refreshing crosswalk markings near all schools

Traffic calming on Bethel Street between San Francisco Ave and 26th Ave NE near Roosevelt Elementary and Reeves Middle

Traffic calming on Road 65 and 20th Ave NW near Hansen Elementary and Marshall Middle

Steering committee alternate Millar will report on the discussion.
