Background and Analysis:

Billy Frank, Jr. has been a revered figure both nationally and internationally over more than five decades.  As a Nisqually tribal leader and Chair of the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission, he played a key role in the fight for treaty fishing rights and environmental stewardship.  Frank was also a tireless advocate for indigenous peoples across the world in saving their own cultures and environment.   

 

Frank was the recipient of many awards, including the Martin Luther King, Jr. Distinguished Service Award for Humanitarian Achievement, the Washington State Medal of Merit and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
