Background and Analysis:
Section 2.100.140 of the Olympia Municipal Code, identifies that one of the duties of the Arts Commission is to review all proposed donations of works of art to the City.
That process is outlined in the Gift of Art policy attached, which states:
A Gifts Panel shall be appointed by the Olympia Arts Commission to review proposed artwork gifts to the City, or Commissioners may choose to review Gift of Art proposals at a regular Commission meeting. Each panel shall consist of at least three to five members representing the Arts Commission. The Arts Program Manager shall serve as facilitator.
A private donor has proposed “Friends Forever Bench,” a sculpture for Heritage Park Fountain more fully described in the attached proposal, as a gift of art to the City.
Commissioners will review the proposal, formulate any additional questions needed and determine a process from the description above.
Climate Analysis:
Other than shipping, the proposed gift of art will not markedly contribute to nor prevent greenhouse gas emissions.
Equity Analysis:
In the application, the donor notes: “Olympia has a diverse cultural mix and this piece certainly celebrates diversity and not only friendships, but also acceptance of people who may not be like ourselves. It's inviting quality appeals to both young and old alike. It's hard to walk by a piece like this without stopping and taking a seat on the bench.”
