Background and Analysis:
The Heritage Commission is planning a series of educational workshops related to cyclical maintenance of historic homes. The first session is planned to be about historic window restoration, and Dave King will be volunteering to lead a workshop
Climate Analysis:
Restoring historic windows provides an opportunity for structures to be more energy efficient, while still maintaining the quality of design and the historic nature of the structure. Following the NPS guidelines encourages repair of historic material as much as possible, which reduces the introduction of more waste to landfills. If repair is not feasible, use of historic, often natural, locally sourced materials is then encouraged, which reduces the environmental impacts of the work.
Equity Analysis:
The educational workshop series is being planned to reach as many people as possible, with the target audience being those who live in older homes. The workshop will be open to the public and will not be exclusive to properties that have already been designated as "historic", so that information on maintenance and upkeep on older properties will be freely available. The Olympia Heritage Commission is dedicated to improving education and outreach opportunities to underrepresented communities. Every listing to the Olympia Heritage Register and design review project is an opportunity for education and outreach.
