Background and Analysis:
Creative District
This Creative District designation, State-certified by the Washington State Arts Commission, is a vehicle to support artists and creative innovators within the current area while expanding its reach. Olympia’s Creative District is a 30-block area of downtown Olympia that is home to over 150 creative enterprises such as theaters, galleries, breweries, and industrial designers. Together they form energetic hubs for creative connection and reflect Olympia’s unique character.
A strategic plan was completed by the Olympia Downtown Alliance earlier this year and presented to City Council during the summer.
Inspire Olympia
Formerly known as Cultural Access, Inspire Olympia dedicates a portion of Olympia’s sales tax to local nonprofit organizations who offer arts, sciences, heritage and cultural programs and experiences for the public in Olympia and in the Olympia School District. The initiative was passed by voters in 2022, sales tax collection began January 1, 2023, and City Council recently approved recommendation for program operation.
