Background and Analysis:
In September, the Olympia City Council appointed 11 new members to the Olympia Youth Council. This onboarding session brings together both new and returning Youth Council members to build relationships, establish group norms, understand leadership dynamics, and begin identifying workplan priorities for the upcoming year.
The onboarding session includes a structured agenda with interactive components such as introductions; self-reflection and communication exercises; discussions on group dynamics to encourage intentional leadership and inclusivity; review and update of group norms; and a " brainstorm for the upcoming year's workplan.
This session is designed to foster collaboration, youth voice, and effective civic participation.
Climate Analysis:
This project is not expected to have an impact on greenhouse gas emissions.
Equity Analysis:
According to data from the Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, approximately 40% of students in Olympia schools identify as minorities, and 20% are economically disadvantaged. (Note: This data excludes students enrolled in non-traditional education programs such as homeschooling or GED programs.)
One of the core purposes of the Olympia Youth Council is to elevate diverse youth voices, particularly those historically underrepresented in civic decision-making and to increase access to civic leadership opportunities.
